Pet Care in Summer Heat and Ways to Protect Them

Discover practical ways to keep cats and dogs cool, prevent dehydration, and protect them from heatstroke during hot summer days.

When thermometers rise and the summer sun begins to make its presence felt, it becomes necessary to make some changes in the daily routines of our furry friends. While humans balance their body temperature through sweat glands, cats and dogs do not possess this mechanism in the same way. Sweating slightly from their paws and trying to cool down mainly through panting, our friends struggle immensely during hot weather. Taking conscious steps during this period directly affects both the comfort and health of your companions. Simple yet effective precautions to be taken especially indoors and outdoors form the key to getting through the summer months safely.

Planning Walks During the Hottest Hours of the Day

For dog owners, the most critical rule of the summer months is rescheduling walk times. Early morning hours or the cool time frames after sunset are the best choices for going outside. Asphalt absorbs heat for hours under the sun and becomes extremely hot, which can lead to severe burns on dogs' sensitive paws. A practical method is to check the temperature of the asphalt with the back of your hand before going out. If the surface is hot enough to burn your hand, it means it is dangerous for their paws as well. On such days, shortening the duration of the walk and choosing shaded park paths both protects the paws and prevents excessive exertion.

Cool Areas Indoors and Water Consumption

Indoors, cool rooms with good air circulation and no direct sunlight create safe shelters for pets. Cats usually find the coolest corners of the house on their own, such as bathroom tiles or kitchen floors; leaving simple cushions where they can stretch out comfortably in these areas is sufficient. The water bowl issue is of vital importance during the summer months. Fresh and cool water bowls placed at different points of the house encourage water consumption. Since cats may prefer moving water over stagnant water, indoor pet water fountains provide a useful alternative. Adding fresh ice cubes to the water bowls a few times during the day helps keep the water temperature low for a long time.

Severe heat sometimes increases the risk of heatstroke, which manifests with symptoms such as loss of appetite, lethargy, or excessive breathing. If you notice unusual sluggishness, drooling, or loss of balance in your pet, you need to take them to a cool environment without wasting time. Rather than pouring freezing cold water on them, gently wiping their paws and body with a damp towel is a safer first step. In unusual health situations and noticeable behavioral changes, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian to get the most accurate guidance. It should not be forgotten that enjoying the summer season safely is only possible with a conscious care routine.
