Wanpy Wet Dog Food: The Difference Between Pouches, Pastes, and Cans
We calculated the calories of 10 Wanpy dog products: pouches and meat pastes make up a small share of daily energy, while Complete Balanced is the only complete food.
The 10 wet dog foods in our Wanpy catalog are divided into three packaging types: 375 g Complete Balanced cans, 100 g pouches, and 90 g Tasty Meat Pastes. Moisture is high in all three (between 84% and 90%), but the energy calculated from package analysis varies significantly. Pouches and pastes provide only about 6–9% of a 5 kg dog's daily energy, while cans provide about 59%. This article uses figures to show which is a meal and which is a supplement.
Table: 10 products, dry matter, and calories
We estimated energy using the modified Atwater method (3.5 kcal per gram of protein and carbohydrate, 8.5 kcal per gram of fat). We tested the method against the manufacturer's own energy declaration in our N&D wet dog food article: estimates fall about 4–6% below declared values, so read the table as "slightly low." We used a rough reference for daily energy: resting energy is about 1.6 times 70 × kg^0.75; about 374 kcal for a 5 kg dog, and about 630 kcal for a 10 kg dog. You can also check the Royal Canin analysis for the general method.

Finding 1: Changing the flavor in the same packaging does not change the analysis
The analysis of the two canned recipes (Chicken and Beef) is identical; the analysis of the four pouches (Chicken, Chicken & Duck, Chicken & Vegetables, and Chicken & Liver) is identical; and the analysis of the four meat pastes (Duck, Beef, Chicken, Lamb) is also identical. This means the manufacturer declares analytical values for the recipe family as a whole. When choosing a flavor, you should look at your dog's preference and sensitivity rather than nutritional differences.
Finding 2: Complete Balanced is the only product labeled as "complete food"
The Complete Balanced Biftekli Tahılsız product is defined on the package as a "complete food" for adult dogs of all breeds, and it contains no corn, wheat, or soy. Moisture is 84%, protein 5.5%, and fat 4%; its energy is approximately 59 kcal/100 g, meaning a 375 g can provides about 219 kcal. If this were fed as a sole meal for a 5 kg dog, it would mean about 1.7 cans per day, and about 2.9 cans for a 10 kg dog. Although the recipe is grain-free, starch is included in the ingredient list; the term "grain-free" does not mean carbohydrate-free. On a dry matter basis, its fat is the highest among the three at 25%, and its protein is the lowest at 34%; this differs from the almost pure protein profile in pouches and pastes, representing a structure designed as a meal.
Finding 3: Pouches and pastes are supplements, not meals
In the Pouch Tavuklu recipe, moisture is 90%, protein 9%, fat 0.1%; a 100 g pouch provides about 32 kcal. In the Tasty Meat Paste recipes, moisture is 90%, protein 6.5%, and fat 0.1%; a 90 g paste provides about 23 kcal. The packaging states this in its own words as well: the paste says "does not replace the main meal," and the pouch suggests "recommended to be served fresh between meals." The chicken pouch contains 41% chicken, while the ingredient list of the paste includes duck, chicken, carrot, peas, and starch.
A common rule for treats and supplements is that they should not exceed about 10% of daily energy. For a 5 kg dog, this is about 37 kcal: meaning one pouch per day (32 kcal) or about 1.7 pastes. If you try to feed pouches or paste instead of a meal, a 5 kg dog would need about 12 pouches a day; this is neither practical nor nutritionally appropriate since the packaging does not state these products are complete foods.
The label total for the pouch slightly exceeds 100%
In the pouch, the sum of moisture, protein, fat, ash, and fiber percentages is 101.1, slightly exceeding 100%. In the paste, this total is 99.6. Rounding and measurement tolerances are normal in package analyses. We assumed carbohydrates were zero in the pouch; energy might therefore be slightly overestimated, but the conclusion remains unchanged: these are low-energy products.
What is the paste used for?
The manufacturer recommends the paste to add flavor on top of meals, and to make administering medication and training rewards easier. Thanks to its liquid consistency and twist-off cap, it can be practical for hiding medication or getting a picky dog used to dry food; however, always rely on your veterinarian's advice for medication administration methods. Multipack options (6 × 90 g) are available for regular users.
Which one for whom?
- Adult dog looking for a main meal: Complete Balanced can (the only product labeled as complete food).
- Owner wanting to add flavor to dry food: pouches, as a supplement between meals.
- For medication or reward moments: meat paste, within the 10% limit of daily energy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Wanpy pouches replace the main meal?
Since the packaging recommends them to be "served fresh between meals," they should be used as supplements, not as main meals. The Wanpy product labeled as a complete food is the Complete Balanced can.
How many grams of Wanpy meat paste should be given daily?
The packaging states that it does not replace the main meal and should be given between meals. Its energy is low (about 23 kcal in 90 g); adjust it as a treat so it does not exceed about 10% of daily energy.
Do grain-free foods contain no starch?
No. Complete Balanced's ingredient list includes starch; grain-free means it contains no corn, wheat, or soy.
How long can an opened can be stored?
The packaging recommends storing opened cans in the refrigerator and consuming them within 48 hours.
Are calorie values exact?
No. They are estimates based on package analysis and tend to fall a few percentage points below declared energy. Because label totals exceed 100% in pouches and pastes, values are approximate.
