Royal Canin Wet Dog Food: Pouch or Can?
The exact same wet dog food is available in both pouches and cans. We compared the calories of 10 products with the daily energy needs of 3, 8, 18, and 30 kg dogs.
Royal Canin's wet dog foods come in two very different formats under the same label: an 85 g single-serving pouch and 195 g or 410 g cans. For a Chihuahua, a pouch is a small part of a meal; for a Maxi dog, it's barely a bite. In this article, we calculated 10 Royal Canin wet dog foods from our catalog on a dry matter and calorie basis, determining how much of the daily energy for four sample dog weights each packaging provides.
How did we calculate?
We estimated energy using the modified Atwater method: 3.5 kcal per gram of protein and carbohydrate, and 8.5 kcal per gram of fat. We tested the accuracy of the method against two sources. For the Mini Adult can, the manufacturer declares 918 kcal/kg; our estimate is 874 kcal/kg, which is about 5% lower. In our N&D cat food can article, we ran the same test on five products and saw that estimates fell 5–10% below declared values; read the table as "slightly low." You can also check our Royal Canin cat and dog analysis for the general method.
For daily energy, we used a rough reference: resting energy is about 1.6 times 70 × kg^0.75 (moderately active, neutered adult dog). This is about 255 kcal for 3 kg, 533 kcal for 8 kg, 979 kcal for 18 kg, and 1436 kcal for 30 kg. These are averages; a dog's activity, breed, and age significantly alter the result.
Table: energy per package and daily share
The table is sorted from smallest to largest by package energy. The last four columns show the ratio of the entire package to the rough daily energy of a dog of that weight; a value exceeding 100% indicates that a single package provides more than a full day's energy. According to the manufacturer, Mini cans are for dogs up to 10 kg, Medium for 11–25 kg, and Maxi for 26–44 kg.

Finding 1: Package size seems chosen according to the target dog
Pouches range between 72–80 kcal. Their share of daily energy is about 28% for a 3 kg dog and only 5% for a 30 kg dog. The Mini can (195 g, approx. 170 kcal) covers about 32% of the daily energy for an 8 kg dog in its target class. The Medium can (410 g, approx. 366 kcal) holds a 37% share in an 18 kg dog, while the Maxi can (410 g, approx. 369 kcal) holds a 26% share in a 30 kg dog. In other words, each package corresponds to roughly 26% to 37% of the daily energy for its respective target dog. This may not be a coincidence: a single package appears designed as a single meal or as a meal topper.
Finding 2: The 410 g can is way too large for a small dog
The same Medium can accounts for about 143% of the daily energy for a 3 kg dog; meaning a single tin exceeds a full day's energy. For a small breed owner, the takeaway is this: either divide the opened tin across a few days (paying attention to refrigerator storage time) or choose single-serving pouches or the 195 g Mini can.
Finding 3: Breed-specific pouches step slightly ahead in fat
Energy in Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Poodle, and Pomeranian pouches is 76–80 kcal/pouch; the Mini Adult pouch is 72 kcal. Crude fat is 5.5–6.0% in breed-specific products and 5.5% in Mini Adult. The difference is small but the direction is clear: breed-specific pouches are slightly denser. You can view our products for Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Poodle, and Pomeranian. Dry matter protein ranges between 39–42% in these products.
Finding 4: How much does a pouch deduct from dry food?
When feeding wet food alongside dry food, you need to subtract its energy from the dry food. Example: if your dry food is 3,800 kcal/kg, the daily dry food allowance for a 3 kg dog is about 67 g (255 kcal ÷ 3.8). One Pouch Mini Adult Wet Dog Food pouch (72 kcal) equals about 19 g of this. Read your own dry food's kcal/kg value from the packaging and do the same calculation.
What is not in the table
Products missing from our records were not accounted for in the analysis: Pouch Sterilised Adult All Breeds Neutered Wet Dog Food, Pouch Dermacomfort Skin & Coat Care Wet Dog Food, Pouch Exigent Fussy Appetite All Breeds Wet Dog Food, and Starter Mousse Mother & Babydog Can. Additionally, packaging analysis was unavailable for the Medium/Maxi Adult and Puppy Gravy series (140 g pouches) and Starter Mousse (195 g, for mothers up to 10 kg and puppies up to 2 months), so energy calculations could not be made. Feeding amounts for these should be determined from the table on the packaging.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Royal Canin wet dog food complete on its own?
Products are labeled as "complete food" on the packaging; Medium, Maxi, and Mini Adult are defined as complete food. They can also be given mixed with dry food; the table on the packaging should be followed for ratios.
Pouch or can for a Chihuahua?
For a dog weighing 2–3 kg, a 410 g can exceeds a full day's energy. Single-serving pouches or the 195 g Mini can are more practical; there are also pouches specifically formulated for Chihuahuas.
Is there a nutritional difference between pouches and cans?
Protein and fat ratios between the products are close: dry matter protein ranges between 38–44%, and fat between 26–29%. The main difference is in package size and texture (sauce in pouches, mousse in cans).
How long can an opened can be stored?
It is generally recommended to consume it within a day or two stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container; the storage instructions on the packaging should be followed.
Are the calorie values exact?
No. They are estimates made from package analysis and tend to fall a few percentage points below the declared value. The daily energy calculation is also for an average dog.
Data source and limitations
Values are taken from product records in our catalog; 10 products with complete moisture, protein, fat, and ash information are included in the table. If the manufacturer changes the recipe, the values may also change. This article is for general informational purposes; for dogs with health issues, pregnant, nursing, or senior dogs, a veterinarian's opinion is required for a nutrition plan.
