Pro Plan Cat Wet Food: Energy Difference in the Same 85 g
There is a 72% energy difference between the Pro Plan Delicate canned food and the Sterilised jelly pouch. Dry matter, calorie, and daily guide table of 7 products.
The exact same 85 grams. On one side, the Pro Plan Delicate Turkey canned food, and on the other, the Pro Plan Sterilised Ocean Fish jelly pouch. The packaging looks similar, the portion is the same; but based on our calculations from the packaging analysis, the energy in one is approximately 101 kcal, while in the other it is about 58 kcal. The difference between them is 72%. In this article, we compared 7 Pro Plan wet cat foods from our catalog with complete analysis on a dry matter and calorie basis, and we also looked at how much the manufacturer's daily quantity guidelines diverge from one another.
Table: 7 Pro Plan wet foods, dry matter and calories
All cans and pouches are 85 g. Energy was estimated using the modified Atwater method (3.5 kcal per gram of protein and carbohydrate, 8.5 kcal per gram of fat). We tested this method against the manufacturer's own energy statement in our N&D article; estimates fall about 5–10% below the declared values, so read the table as "slightly low." For detailed methodology, you can check the Royal Canin analysis.
| Product | Format | Moisture | Dry Matter Protein | Dry Matter Fat | kcal / 100 g | kcal / 85 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pouch Jöle İçinde Okyanus Balık Etli Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Yaş Maması | pouch, jelly | 82% | 54.4% | 18.3% | 69 | 58 |
| Pouch Sos İçinde Somonlu Indoor Kedi Yaş Maması | pouch, gravy | 79% | 57.1% | 19.0% | 82 | 70 |
| Pouch Sos İçinde Balık Etli Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Yaş Maması | pouch, gravy | 78% | 59.1% | 15.0% | 85 | 72 |
| Pouch Sos İçinde Tavşan Etli Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Yaş Maması | pouch, gravy | 78% | 56.8% | 18.2% | 88 | 75 |
| Sterilised Ton Balıklı ve Somonlu Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Konservesi | canned | 77% | 56.5% | 21.7% | 95 | 81 |
| Adult Tavuklu ve Sebzeli Yetişkin Kedi Konservesi | canned | 77% | 54.3% | 26.1% | 100 | 85 |
| Delicate Hassas Hindi Etli Kedi Konservesi | canned | 76% | 45.8% | 36.7% | 118 | 101 |
Why is Delicate so dense?
In the Delicate Turkey canned food, fat is 8.8%; this means 36.7% fat on a dry matter basis, which is the highest ratio in the table. In sterilised products, fat ranges between 3.3% and 5%. The word "sensitive" in the name does not mean "light": it is a soft recipe for cats with sensitive digestion, but its energy density is at the top of the list. For a sensitive cat prone to weight gain, this may require reducing the number of pouches or cans.
Conversely, the lightest product is the Pouch Sterilised Cat Wet Food with Ocean Fish in Jelly (approx. 69 kcal/100 g). Moisture in this product is 82%; meaning the bulk of the weight is water. Among sterilised pouches, the jelly recipe is both more watery (82% vs. 78%) and lower in protein (9.8% vs. 10%) compared to the gravy one, and has about 0% less energy.
Why don't the manufacturer guidelines match each other?
Some of the Pro Plan packages state the daily amount for a 4 kg cat. We multiplied this amount by the estimated energy of the product:
| Product | Daily recommendation on label (4 kg cat) | Estimated daily energy |
|---|---|---|
| Sterilised Ton Balıklı ve Somonlu Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Konservesi | 2–3 cans | 161–242 kcal |
| Pouch Sos İçinde Somonlu Indoor Kedi Yaş Maması | 2.5 pouches | 175 kcal |
| Delicate Hassas Hindi Etli Kedi Konservesi | 2–3 cans | 201–302 kcal |
| Adult Tavuklu ve Sebzeli Yetişkin Kedi Konservesi | 3 cans | 255 kcal |
Guidelines range between 161 kcal and 302 kcal; whereas the rough daily energy for a 4 kg sterilised cat is about 238 kcal (resting energy is approximately 1.2 times 70 × kg^0.75). In other words, for the same 4 kg cat, the guidelines correspond to between roughly 68% and 127% of the requirement depending on the product. This is not a contradiction: each guideline is written according to the cat the product targets (indoor, sterilised, sensitive). However, it shows this: switching products using general habits like "one can per meal" can significantly shift daily energy. When you change products, recalculate the amount from the packaging table and monitor your cat by weighing them.
Taurine: How fluid share changes percentages
The taurine amount is written in mg/kg on the packaging of the three Sterilised pouches. When this value is converted to dry matter, the table changes:
| Product | Taurine on packaging (mg/kg) | On a dry matter basis (mg/kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Pouch Jöle İçinde Okyanus Balık Etli Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Yaş Maması | 360 | 2000 |
| Pouch Sos İçinde Balık Etli Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Yaş Maması | 660 | 3000 |
| Pouch Sos İçinde Tavşan Etli Kısırlaştırılmış Kedi Yaş Maması | 560 | 2545 |
Taurine on the packaging appears lower in the jelly pouch because moisture is higher. On a dry matter basis, the difference narrows (about 1.0x on the package, about 1.0x on a dry matter basis) but does not disappear. Products bearing a complete pet food label are expected to meet relevant nutritional standards; evaluating the compliance of these products with the standard is not the subject of this article, here we are merely showing how packaging percentages play with the fluid share.
How much of the named ingredient is there?
In most of the pouches, the named ingredient is 4%: white fish, beef, ocean fish, salmon, tuna. In canned products, the ratio is expressed differently: in Delicate Turkey, "14% of meat and animal derivatives is turkey", meaning turkey is 14% of the meat and animal derivatives portion, not the total recipe. The Adult Chicken and Vegetable canned food has the same expression (14% chicken). Kitten cans specify 18% chicken meat. These different forms of expression make it difficult to directly compare ratios; reading the packaging sentence word for word is best.
Complementary products: Hydra Care and Hairball Care
- [Hydra Care](/urun/pro-plan-pouch-tavuk-etli-feline-hydra-care-kedi-yas-mamasi-146112) (75 g × 10 pouches): chicken jelly; prepared as a third bowl in addition to dry food to increase daily fluid intake. The manufacturer states that an average of 28% more fluid consumption per day is targeted compared to cats consuming only water and dry food; this is the manufacturer's own statement. The package also notes that cats should drink at least 25 ml/kg of water per day. It is a complementary product, it does not replace the main meal.
- [Hairball Care](/urun/pro-plan-pouch-hairball-care-tuy-yumagi-kontrolu-kedi-yas-mamasi-6ac676) (35 g × 7 pouches): complementary wet food for hairball control; 1 pouch per day is recommended and it does not replace the main meal.
Since packaging analysis records for these two products are not in our database, no energy calculation was made.
Kitten products
Kitten and Baby Kitten cans have a pâté texture, contain 18% chicken, and are labeled as "complete food" for kittens and nursing cats; pouch products also include Kitten with Turkey in Gravy. We do not have analysis records for kitten products, so they were not included in the calculation. The daily amount for a kitten should be determined from the packaging according to its age and weight.
Gravy, jelly, or canned: which one for whom?
- Sterilised cat prone to weight gain: jelly pouch is the lowest energy option; the two gravy options are close (75 and 58 kcal/pouch).
- Indoor cat: Indoor Salmon pouch, 70 kcal/pouch; the label recommends 2.5 pouches per day for a 4 kg cat.
- Cat with sensitive digestion: Delicate; but its energy is high, adjust the amount accordingly.
- Appetite-driven adult without weight issues: Adult Chicken and Vegetable canned food (3 cans per day on the label).
For all options, you can check the Sterilised Wet Cat Food and Wet Cat Food categories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pro Plan Sterilised wet food sufficient on its own?
Sterilised recipes are labeled as "complete wet food" on the packaging; meaning they can be given on their own according to the package. The amount should be adjusted according to the cat's weight.
Should gravy or jelly be preferred?
According to the analysis, both are complete foods; the jelly recipe has higher water content and lower energy. If weight control is targeted, jelly may stand out; if appetite support is desired, gravy may stand out; the cat's preference is also decisive.
Is Pro Plan Delicate suitable for a sterilised cat?
Delicate is prepared for adult cats with sensitive digestion; because its fat content is high, it should be used with caution and in smaller portions in sterilised cats prone to weight gain. Recipes with "Sterilised" written on their labels are targeted for sterilised cats.
Does Hydra Care replace the main meal?
No. It is stated as a complementary product on its packaging and is recommended to be given in a separate bowl in addition to dry food.
Are the calorie values exact?
No, they are estimates made from packaging analysis and tend to fall a few percentage points below the declared energy. Check the product packaging for exact values.
Data source and limitations
The values are taken from the packaging analysis found in the product records of our catalog; 7 products with complete moisture, protein, fat, and ash information have been entered into the table. Other Pro Plan wet foods (Hairball Care, Hydra Care, Kitten and Baby Kitten, Beef in Gravy, Delicate Ocean Fish pouch, and similar ones) were not included in the calculation as there are no analysis records. If the manufacturer changes the recipe, the values may also change. The article is for general informational purposes; for cats with health issues, a veterinarian's opinion is required for a nutrition plan.
