Cat Bed Selection: A Guide to Finding the Right Product

Find practical tips in this article to consider when choosing the right cat bed that suits your cat's sleeping habits and your home.

As pet owners, we know that cats spend a large part of the day sleeping. An average cat sleeps between 12 and 16 hours a day, which shows how important a proper resting area is for their overall comfort. There are many different models available on the market with various materials, sizes, and designs. However, every cat prefers to sleep in an area suited to their character and age. While some of our companions feel safe in completely enclosed and dark areas, others like to rest in high places where they can view their surroundings. Therefore, observing your cat's behaviors rather than aesthetic details should be the first step when making a choice.

Observe Your Cat's Sleeping Habits and Position

Before buying a bed, it is useful to examine what position your cat assumes while sleeping. If your cat sleeps curled up, meaning in the shape of a ball, designs with high and oval edges will give them a mother's embrace feeling. These types of enveloping models help cats feel safe. On the other hand, rimless cushions or flat beds are more suitable for cats who like to stretch their legs out or sleep on their backs. As for senior cats, joint sensitivity may be observed; orthopedic beds with low steps, no risk of sinking in, and evenly distributing body weight should be chosen for our companions in this condition. Kittens, on the other hand, usually fall asleep wherever they find right after burning off their energy, but baskets with rims they can climb into can also be appealing to them.

Material Selection and Ease of Cleaning

The type of fabric used in making the cat bed is a critical factor both for your cat's health and your cleaning routine. Although cats shed fur and occasionally pay attention to paw hygiene, they are creatures that can carry saliva or paw dirt into their beds. For this reason, products with completely removable covers that are machine washable provide great convenience. As for fabric preference, scratch-resistant, non-shedding, and breathable textures should be chosen. Polyester-blend fabrics are generally easy to clean, but some cats might prefer cotton or felt surfaces. Beds with plastic bases or non-slip bottoms prevent the bed from sliding when your cat gets in and out, keeping it steady on hardwood floors.

Placement Inside the Home and Proper Positioning

Where the bed is placed inside the home directly determines whether your cat will use that product. Cats generally like quiet corners that are not drafty, where they can observe the general activity of the house while also finding peace. Crowded hallways or behind doors where people constantly pass by can reduce their sleep quality. If there is more than one cat at home, having a separate resting area for each of them and distributing these areas to different rooms reduces potential tensions. If your cat does not embrace their new bed right away, you can speed up the adaptation process by placing one of their favorite blankets, soaked in their scent, inside the bed. Consulting a veterinarian is recommended if difficulties are experienced during the acclimation process or if sudden behavioral changes are observed in your cat.
